Quite literally, 212 is simply a number. Just like 211, or 213. But if you delve a little into wikipedia, you will know that 212 is the area code of most of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Yes, Manhattan, the amazing and romantic city of Manhattan! Look at Urban Dictionary and it’ll tell you that 212 is a person or a location that is inherently chill in nature and anything but uncool. But what is 212 here in Pune? Well, it’s the newly opened 212 All Day Cafe & Bar, which just like all other 212 things is anything but uncool!
Located at Phoenix Mall in Viman Nagar, the first look of this place will give you a pleasant and happy vibe, but wait till you see all of it because that is not the best part. Green, blue and white are the colours which dominate the interiors; the overall look is classy and yet something about it gives you a chill and relaxed feeling. Chef Paul has brought together a pretty amazing collection of continental dishes here at 212, which you might not find elsewhere.
I went there on a Tuesday night with a friend to try out the food and have a look at the way it has been set up. I tried a lot of dishes on the menu but I am going to pen down the ones I really liked, because they were absolutely spectacular and preparations that I’d definitely order the next time I go there. The first one is Mushroom Soup; thick, creamy and of the perfect consistency, this will get you in a good mood right from the moment you start off your meal. The Crumbling Crostini was another interesting dish, which basically is the ‘khari’ we have for breakfast, topped with bits of roasted chicken. Light on the stomach and delicious, this is another dish you must try. Next, we had the Gambas Caliente, which is essentially pan tossed shrimp, with spicy garlic and a paprika glaze. This one was easily one of the best shrimp dishes that I have ever had! Deliciously mouth-watering, the shrimp was well cooked on the inside and just the right amount of crunchy on the outside. I absolutely recommend it!
For mains, one of my favourites was the Penne with Sundried Tomato Creme. Now the penne itself is a steal but the sundried tomato crème is what makes this dish so extraordinary! Mix this crème with your pasta as you take every bite and you will be hugging Chef Paul in your mind with every bite. No, seriously! Another super dish was the Chargrilled Chicken Breast; soft, cooked just the right amount and with the sauce on top, this dish totally wins your heart, and at the end of it, your stomach too. One dish that I wasn’t too fond of was the plate of Buffalo Chicken Wings. The wings weren’t exactly bad but I’ve had way better ones at other places.
212 All Day Cafe & Bar is getting their alcohol license sorted soon but till then you might want to order one of the mocktails to go with all the food. I’d recommend the Watermeloni, it’s fresh and yummy. You are sure going to be pretty full after such a massive meal but do not forget to try the desserts! We tried the Carrot Cake, Tiramisu Cake and the Warm Chocolate Lava Cake. Although I wasn’t too impressed with the first two, the Lava Cake had me drooling with every bite. It’s perhaps also because I have a chocolate tooth!
The better part of the interiors comes into the picture when you visit the outside area. It is spacious, huge and is very prettily lit. It’d be amazing with a bunch of close friends or even for a romantic date. So make sure you get your table there. Do try the place and I can assure you that it’ll make you go “Two One Too Much”.
